On Friday, April 29, 2016, a sandstone monument memorializing Trooper Christopher Marano will be unveiled and dedicated during a ceremony that will commence at 10:00 a.m., at the Arizona Department of Public Safety’s (ADPS) [Douglas] Knutson Station located at 2610 South 16th Street in Phoenix.
Family, friends and the public are invited to attend the ceremony.
“It is our honor to dedicate the memorial stone in Chris’ memory, so every trooper that steps into the Knutson substation can reflect on the ultimate price that Chris gave. This will in some way give closure to Chris’ end of watch,” said ADPS Captain Peter Borquez.
Trooper Christopher Marano died on December 17, 2009, from injuries he sustained during the Department’s pursuit of a stolen vehicle along the Loop 101. Officer Marano was standing in the right shoulder of the freeway. The suspect vehicle veered into the right shoulder while the pursuing DPS patrol vehicle remained in the right travel lane striking Officer Marano.
Officer Marano had served with DPS three and one half years. He was born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He graduated from High School in 2000 from Washburn High School in Minnesota before joining the Navy where he was in active service as a military police officer from 2000-2005. Marano was in the Navy reserve from 2005 until 2008.
