San Simon will have Red flag warnings coupled with a high wind advisory will most likely close a portion of Interstate 10 in Cochise County near San Simon Thursday and Friday, May 5th and 6th.
For over the last week, the Arizona Department of Public Safety (ADPS) has been responding to blowing dust and multiple collisions in the area near San Simon. Many of these collisions have resulted in injuries and extensive property damage. In an effort to prevent these collisions and possible severe injuries or death, ADPS, along with the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), have taken several steps to mitigate this problem.
The speed limit has been reduced from 75 mph to 65 mph in the area of mileposts 374 to 378 both east and westbound. Both ADPS and ADOT are staging equipment and personnel in the area to close the interstate at a moment’s notice. Motorists traveling through the area of San Simon should expect delays and possible detours. There is no time-frame for a solution to this problem and motorists should expect these closures anytime there are high winds. During extreme weather scenarios, ADOT may post temporary signage lowering the speed limit to 45 mph.
If you do find yourself in a dust storm ADPS would like to remind drivers of the following:
- Do not stop in a travel lane or in the emergency lane
- Turn off all vehicle lights
- Take your foot off the brake
- Stay in the vehicle with your seat-belts buckled
