Jonathan David Perez, age 38, is in custody after shooting at a Maricopa County deputy in Surprise on Friday. Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio called the shooting part of the “war on cops.”
Perez pulled into the substation parking lot near Dysart and Bell roads around 3:45 p.m. in a silver Lexus and started shooting. Perez was standing outside the Lexus when a deputy confronted him and told him to “freeze.”
Perez surrender and was taken into custody.
“I am concerned. We had a deputy ambushed two weeks ago; he took several bullets, and now we have this guy shooting at a deputy going into our substation,” stated Arpaio. “Something is going on across this nation. I have said over and over again; there is a war on cops. I’m going to do everything I can to stop this. They want a war? They’re going to have a war.”
Earlier this week, a Phoenix Police officer was killed while responding to a residential burglary.
