Tucson Police Shoot, Kill Bicyclist In Midtown

The Tucson Police Department is investigating an officer involved shooting of 33-year-old Osee Calix, that took place late Sunday morning on North Columbus Boulevard near East Fairmount Street.

On Sunday, May 30, at approximately 11:15 a.m., an officer conducted a bicycle traffic stop on Mr. Calix on N. Columbus Blvd. near E. Fairmount St. when Mr. Calix fell off his bicycle. The officer called for paramedics and an additional officer to assist. Members from the Tucson Fire Department responded to the scene and treated Mr. Calix for minor injuries that did not require transport to the hospital. The paramedics were getting ready to walk back to their vehicle when Mr. Calix stood up and the officers continued with their investigation.

The officers attempted to detain Mr. Calix when he pulled out a handgun. The officers immediately began to struggle with Mr. Calix over the weapon. Police report that Mr. Calix discharged the weapon and the struggle with the officers continued. One officer then discharged their duty weapon, striking Mr. Calix.

Mr. Calix was taken into custody and the paramedics were summoned back over to treat him. He was transported to Banner University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Mr. Calix later succumbed to injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Detectives from the Violent Crimes Section and the Office of Professional Standards responded to continue the investigation. The Violent Crimes Section is conducting a criminal investigation into the incident. Additionally, the Office of Professional Standards is conducting a separate and parallel administrative investigation to examine the actions of department personnel in response to this incident. This is standard protocol in all officer involved shootings.
