A 34-year-old female inmate of the Pinal County Jail is in critical condition at a local hospital following a suicide attempt while in her cell on July 22. The inmate was in PCSO custody following a July 20 arrest for child abuse, possession of marijuana, auto theft, hit and run, criminal damage and trespassing.
On July 22 and 4:37 p.m., a PCSO detention officer found the inmate in her cell, unconscious, with a sheet around her neck in an apparent suicide attempt. Jail staff immediately began emergency lifesaving measures and called for emergency medical personnel from the Florence Fire Department. She was transported to Chandler Regional Medical Center by air ambulance where she remains in critical condition.
The inmate had recently returned to the jail from a court hearing for her charges, where the judge ordered a $12,500 secured release bond.
PCSO detectives are investigating the circumstances of the incident and at this time, they do not believe any other persons are involved. Detention staff was not aware of any suicide threats and she was not under any special monitoring status.
