Gowan Suspending Congressional Campaign

On Thursday, David Gowan announced that he was suspending his campaign for Arizona’s First Congressional District. Gowan, who was not a resident of the district and carried considerable baggage, had no chance of winning the Republican Primary.

Gowan threw whatever support he had to fellow candidate Gary Keihne who is far behind frontrunner Sheriff Paul Babeu. Keihne, who is currently building a family home in New Mexico, has run a chaotic campaign that has left the residents in the northern part of the district looking for an alternative. As a result, Babeu has gained a solid lead.

According to those close to Gowan, he did not want to be considered a spoiler in the race, but his limited support and the few votes he would have garnered would not likely make a noticeable difference.

Voters received mail-in ballots earlier this week.

Gowan’s tenure as Arizona Speaker of the House was marred by scandal. He was forced to reimburse the State for using government resources for his congressional campaign.

Many expect that he will eventually end-up in high-paying low responsibility job in State government.
