Officials have confirmed the first flu case of the season in Pima County. The case involved an adult who visited their doctor after becoming ill. The individual did not require hospitalization and has since recovered. Officials say because this person had not traveled out of the County in the time leading up to the illness, it’s an indication that the virus has begun to circulate in our community.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends everyone six months and older get the flu vaccine. Last season, Pima County reported more than 3,400 confirmed cases.
The Flu virus spreads from person to person through coughing, sneezing, touching something with flu virus on it, and in some cases through the air. While the flu shot is the absolute best way to prevent the flu – you can take other important steps to take to protect yourself and others from becoming ill:
Wash your hands often. Viruses like the flu can live and spread on surfaces that we touch.
Always cover you cough. Cough and sneeze into your elbow, not your hands.
Stay home when you are sick. Keep kids home from school and other activities until symptoms go away.
