The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard attended the funeral of fallen Show Low Police Officer Darrin Reed on Monday. With them they brought a check for Officer Reed’s wife, Cathy Reed, in the amount of $25,000 from the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office Memorial Fund to assist with any financial needs the family has.
“As we reflect upon the live and sacrifice of Officer Reed, it is important to remember that the family deserves our prayers and support,” said Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
Officer Reed was shot and killed in the line of duty on Tuesday, November 8, when he responded to a disturbance call. Officer Reed was just months from retirement and served Show Low Police Department for the last 10 years and was an Officer for the Navajo County Sheriff’s Office for 10 years before that.
The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office Memorial Fund has been instrumental in assisting the families of fallen and injured officers since the organizations beginnings in 1998. Sheriff Joe Arpaio created the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office Advisory Posse, who oversees the fund, to assist families in the event of a tragedy involving an officer or deputy. Generally, it takes anywhere from 60-90 days before the issuance of any life insurance check to the family and the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office wanted to help bridge that financial gap. Sheriff Arpaio is proud to say that 100% of The Memorial Fund monies are and will be utilized for the benefit of the families of injured and Fallen Officers only.
