Judge Rules For Arizona Minimum Wage Increase

On Wednesday, a Maricopa County Superior Court judge ruled in favor of supporters of Proposition 206, which provides for an increase in the minimum wage and mandates workers’ sick pay.

Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich, who defended the law, tweeted after Judge Daniel Kiley’s ruling: “I will continue to do my job which is to fight for the will of Arizona voters & to uphold the rule of law.”

The chambers of commerce challenged the law, which was passed by voters in November, based on their claim that the law did not provide a source of revenue to cover the increase in costs incurred by the State of Arizona.

During the campaign, Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce President Lea Marquez Peterson called Proposition 206 the “Opportunity Destruction Act.” Marquez Peterson argued that Proposition 206 would hurt “the very Arizonans that the initiative’s proponents claim to want to help,” by making “hiring more expensive.” The chambers believe that Proposition 206 will force small businesses to reduce employee hours or stop hiring completely.
