Pima County Deputies Catch Serial Car Burglars

On Thursday, January 12, 2017, just after 5:00 a.m., Foothills District deputies responded to the 4700 block of West Snowberry Lane for a report of a theft in progress. When deputies arrived, they learned a homeowner had witnessed a male suspect breaking into his car and had chased the suspect away from his home.

Deputies searched the area and came into contact with a suspicious female riding a bicycle. After speaking with the female subject, they learned she was involved in the incident and the male suspect, her boyfriend, was still in the area. Deputies continued to search the area, and were eventually able to locate the vehicle being used by both suspects. The male suspect was located near the vehicle and taken into custody. Deputies were able to locate items which appeared to have been stolen from residences in the area inside the suspect’s vehicle.

Auto Theft detectives responded to the scene and took over the investigation. After conducting their initial investigation, detectives learned the same male and female suspects had broken into multiple cars and homes in the same neighborhood. Detectives placed 19-year-old Mathew Schreiber and 21-year-old Sydney Lupo under arrest for the incidents.

Mr. Schreiber was booked into the Pima County Adult Detention Complex for eleven counts of 3rd Degree Burglary, two counts of 2nd Degree Burglary, one count for Possession of a Dangerous Drug, and one count of Possession of Marijuana.

Ms. Lupo was booked for twelve counts of 3rd Degree Burglary and two counts of 2nd Degree Burglary. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is working in close partnership with the Marana Police Department to determine if Mr. Schreiber and Ms. Lupo are connected to any vehicle break- ins within their jurisdiction. This investigation is ongoing.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department would like to remind everyone to lock their vehicles, especially if the vehicle is parked outside overnight. We would also like to remind everyone that it is a good idea to remove any valuables and garage door openers from the vehicle before leaving it overnight.
