Tucson Pedestrian On Wetmore Road Killed

On March 3, 2017, just after 6:00 a.m., Tucson Police officers and members from the Tucson Fire Department responded to the 200 block of West Wetmore Road for a report of a serious injury collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian, 57-year-old Maria Martinez-Saavedra.

Upon arrival, they located Ms. Martinez-Saavedraan in the roadway who was receiving CPR from a local citizen. Tucson Fire took over medical treatment, however Ms. Martinez-Saavedra was pronounced deceased on scene.

The driver of the vehicle was not injured and remained on scene.

Detectives were able to determine that the driver of a 2013 Chrysler 200 was traveling eastbound on West Wetmore Road from North Oracle Road. The vehicle was in the median lane next to another vehicle that was traveling slightly ahead in the curb lane. Ms. Martinez-Saavedraan began crossing northbound across Wetmore and was not in a crosswalk.

The vehicle in the curb lane narrowly missed Ms. Martinez-Saavedraan. As Ms. Martinez-Saavedraan entered the median lane, she was struck by the Chrysler. The driver of the Chrysler did not see Ms. Martinez-Saavedraan until the collision occurred.

Neither speed nor impairments appear to be factors in the collision. There were no arrests or citations issued.
