Members of the inaugural Ranch Junior Optimist International (JOI) were inducted on January 20, 2017 at Ranch Elementary. Cynthia Vaughn, Arizona District of Optimist International JOI Club Chair, presented the opening dedication. She spoke to the junior inductees about what it means to be part of this international organization and the opportunities to serve youth in their community.
Gilbert Optimist International Club President Julie Wersin inducted the junior officers and members and presented them with their certificate of membership and the Junior Optimist International pin.
Junior President Brenden Black shared that he joined because it showed responsibility and he wanted to help people. Students have already started their first project knitting caps for children going through chemotherapy.
Junior Officer Caedence Thornes also shared her reason for getting involved, “I want to help make a difference in the world.” She was looking forward to making bags for people experiencing homelessness as part of their next project.
Club sponsor Jackie Cross says she was encouraged by the writing students had done in the past as part of a scholarship program. “I am proud that our students wanted to reach out and do service oriented projects.”
