Eliminate And Ignore Citizen Participation – It’s In Oro Valley Leadership’s Nature

When Hiremath ran for Mayor in 2010 he desired to do away with all the citizen Boards and Commissions that were in Oro Valley.

Immediately upon being elected he did away with the Bond and Finance Commission.  This citizen commission was to advise the Finance Dept. during the creation of the budget.  It was made up of people familiar with accounting.  The opportunity for 5 citizens to advise the Town was eliminated.

Then the Development Review Board was abolished and the Conceptual Design Review Board (CDRB) was established.  This was not just a name change because the CDRB to include to Arts Review Commission which was abolished, which now eliminated the chance for 5 citizens to assist the Council in Citizen input.  Does it make sense to have people with an interest and knowledge of public art sitting on a Board that advises on architecture, landscaping, signage, and development.  The Art Review Commission only met when there had to be advise on public art.

On the June 7, 2017 Council agenda is an item to now combine the CBRD with the Planning and Zoning Commission.  This eliminates another chance for 7 people to help advise the Council.  Council cannot abolish the Planning and Zoning Commission and the Board of Adjustment as they are required by State law.

It really does not matter what the Citizens desire.  The June 2014 statistically valid survey (paid for by the Town) indicated that out of 34 possible facilities/amenities the People wanted golf was number 33, zip lines were number 34.  So what does Hiremath and his clones do….they buy 45 holes of golf in December 2014….six months after the completion of the survey.

After the June 7 meeting the people of Oro Valley will lose another opportunity to give their input to the Council and the Town staff.  This might save the Town some money because Hornat and Waters will have one less meeting to attend and charge the Town for the mileage.
