PHOENIX — A Special Meeting of the Maricopa Board of Supervisors has been called for Monday, September 9 to lay out the process to appoint a replacement for County Attorney Bill Montgomery, who was appointed to the Arizona Supreme Court.

Chief Deputy Rachel Mitchell has been tagged to assume responsibility for the office until the Board of Supervisors appoints the interim county attorney.
Mitchell made national headlines when was selected to question Brett Kavanaugh and his accuser, Christine Blasey during his Supreme Court confirmation hearings.
Mitchell, a 26 year veteran of the Office, was promoted to Chief Deputy earlier in the year. The Maricopa Board of Supervisors approved the promotion, making Mitchell the first female Chief Deputy in the history of the office.
In 2000, Mitchell was promoted to Sex Crimes Bureau Chief. In 2017, Mitchell was promoted to Division Chief overseeing the Family Violence Bureaus, Sex Crimes Bureaus, and the Auto Theft Bureau.
