Marijuana, alcohol tie for teen drug use

Teens obtain pot from Medical Marijuana card holders

The findings of the Arizona Criminal Justice Commission’s 2012 Arizona Youth Survey were released this week. The 2012 Arizona Youth Survey, State of Arizona Summary Report summarizes findings from the 2012 Arizona Youth Survey (AYS) administered to 8th, 10th, and 12th grade students during spring 2012.

The survey was designed to assess school safety, adolescent substance use, antisocial behavior and the risk and protective factors that predict these adolescent problem behaviors.

The study found that 86.4 of participants reported that they had never been hit, slapped, pushed, shoved, kicked, or any other way physically assaulted by your boyfriend or girlfriend? An even higher percentage, 89.4, had never seen someone attacked with a weapon other than a gun, such as a knife, bat, bottle, or chain?

Of the students who had used marijuana in the past 30 days, 11.6 received it from Medical Marijuana card holders, and 14.8 got it from their parents. The survey did not ask if the parents were Medical Marijuana card holders.

Of the students who had consumed alcohol, 30.3 percent reported giving money to someone else to buy it for them. 16.6 percent reported getting it from their parents, and 17.3 percent reported getting it from another relative. Only 28.8 percent of students surveyed reported consuming alcohol in their lifetime. That nearly ties marijuana consumption, which 28.7 percent of student reported using in their lifetime.
