Border Patrol discovers tunnel during bi-national sweep

tunnell-nogalesTucson Sector Border Patrol agents discovered an illicit tunnel that came to an abrupt stop at the concrete remediation site of a previous cross-border tunnel located earlier this year.

Nogales Station agents, working with the Nogales International Liaison Unit and Mexican law enforcement, discovered an incomplete cross-border tunnel on March 13th, while conducting a routine bi-national tunnel sweep in Nogales, Arizona.

After observing cinder blocks with fresh mortar within the drainage channel, agents and Mexican federal authorities discovered a 16 by 16 inch tunnel west of the DeConcini Port of Entry leading towards the United States. The tunnel measured approximately 25 feet in length with only six and a half feet extending into the U.S. The tunnel came to an abrupt stop when it hit a remediated tunnel from January of this year.

Agents will continue to monitor and inspect the incomplete tunnel until remediation is complete.
