McSally and Koskiniemi face off in CD2 forum

Koskiniemi and McSally discuss healthcare and border security

Martha McSally returned to Tucson after spending most of her time out of state raising money to face off with CD2 Republican Primary opponent Mark Koskiniemi in a forum hosted by Arizona Public Media. This week, McSally supporters said, “the campaign is currently focusing on fundraising,” and lauded her return to town for media events.

McSally said that the tax known as Affordable Healthcare needs to be repealed and replaced. She said that she had sat down with experts, “several initiatives have been brought to my attention,” but it appeared that she could only remember two of their recommendations; portability and the ability to buy insurance across state lines.

Koskiniemi argued for state’s rights. He said that his campaign is trying to “get people to focus again on the ever expanding federal government.” He said that each state should have the opportunity to make a decision about healthcare that works for their particular state. He expressed concern about the ability to buy insurance across state line saying, “I have one concern because originally people were saying that the law was going to be found unconstitutional based on the Commerce Clause, if we start opening things up across state lines, then we may negate that argument.”

When asked about border security, Koskiniemi said that we need to make sure our border patrol agents are being properly “deployed and that they have the proper rules of engagement to effectively secure our borders and to protect our citizens in this district.” He said he was disappointed in Homeland Security’s, Janet Napolitano, and the Obama administration’s “form of the DREAM Act.” He said that DREAM Act now means, “Don’t really expect that anyone is moving. We need to enforce the laws we have.”

McSally has received most of her support from out of Arizona, while Koskiniemi has become very popular very quickly earning local support by campaining in state.

The winner of the Republican Primary will face the winner of the Democratic Primary; either Ron Barber or Matt Heinz.
