In the morning hours of September 1, 2012, a bank robber, 49-year-old William D. Leverett, came to the Pima County Jail and stated he wanted to turn himself in for the reported bank robberies in Tucson and Green Valley. He was taken into custody by deputies and later interviewed by detectives.
A follow-up investigation began to ensure authorities were in fact dealing with the correct individual.
During their investigations, detectives learned that Leverett’s ex-girlfriend had contacted him and persuaded him to turn himself in, after she saw his picture on the news. Leverett reportedly was reluctant at first, but agreed to accompany his ex-girlfriend to authorities. They drove to the Tucson Police Department station at Stone Avenue, but were not able to make contact with anyone there. From Stone Avenue they went to the Tucson Police Department station on Miracle Mile, which was also unattended. They ultimately decided to go directly to the Pima County Jail, where deputies took Leverett into custody.
On August 31, deputies with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department Green Valley District responded to a robbery at the Commerce Bank located at Esperanza Boulevard and La Canada Drive in Green Valley. Detectives learned that Leverett had entered the bank earlier and handed the teller a note demanding money. No weapons were implied, and he left the building with an undisclosed amount of cash. He reportedly fled eastbound from the bank on foot. After reviewing surveillance footage, detectives determined that the Leverett was the same individual they are looking for in three other bank robberies that occurred in the Tucson metro area.
Leverett was charged with the bank robberies on August 31, 2012 in Green Valley and August 24, 2012 on Ina Road. The investigation by the Robbery/Assault Unit continues.
