Illegal fireworks cause Yuma palm tree fire

Fireworks set palm tree tops ablaze

On Monday December 24, 2012 just before 8:00pm, palm trees were reported to be on fire and endangering homes in the 1800 block of Athens Avenue. Arriving Yuma Fire Department personnel found several trees burning in the area of 1830 Athens Avenue with flying embers endangering surrounding homes.

Firefighters quickly knocked down the flames and gained access to the top of the trees to finish extinguishing the fire and ensure it was out. The fire was stopped before any homes sustained damage.

An investigation at the scene determined someone using illegal aerial fireworks caused the fire. The suspect was identified and the investigation was turned over to the Yuma Police Department for enforcement action. Please refer questions regarding enforcement action to YPD.

Yuma Police say that as we get closer to New Year’s Eve, people are reminded that any fireworks that explode or leave the ground (such as firecrackers or bottle rockets) are still illegal and violators are subject to arrest. You are also responsible for any property damage, injury, or death resulting from fireworks use. The same goes for the discharge of firearms to celebrate.
