Alcohol factor in multi-car crash

Pima County deputies were called to serious collision involving multiple vehicles in the vicinity of Mark Road and Valencia Road on January 27, 2012, at about 8:49 p.m. Upon arrival, they found four vehicles involved in the crash with multiple occupants injured.

Investigators with the Sheriff’s Traffic Unit responded to the scene. They determined that a passenger car, occupied only by the 47-year-old male driver, travelled eastbound on Valencia Road towards Mark Road. He struck one vehicle travelling in the same direction, skidded and then struck a second vehicle in the opposing lane of traffic. Finally, he collided with another passenger car head on. That vehicle was occupied by six people.

The driver of the vehicle causing the collisions was transported to University of Arizona Medical Center (UAMC) with life threatening injuries. He remains in critical condition. The driver of the car that was struck head-on, a 72-year-old female, suffered serious injuries, but is in stable condition. The same goes for the front passenger. The other four occupants suffered only minor injuries. All occupants were wearing seatbelts. The injured were transported to St. Mary’s Hospital and UAMC.

Alcohol is considered to be a factor on the part of the 47-year-old driver who caused the collision. The investigation continues.
