Maricopa County Stormwater Pollution Poster winners named

Maricopa County Stormwater Pollution Poster Contest Winners Maricopa County Environmental Services Department Stormwater Quality Program is proud to announce the results of the 2013 Stormwater Pollution Awareness Poster Contest.

Stormwater runoff is one of the leading causes of water pollution in the United States. In an effort to bring awareness to this problem, elementary students in Maricopa County were encouraged to submit posters supporting the message “Clean Water, I Can Help”.

A total of 175 entries from nine schools were received and judged based on artwork, originality, and message delivery. With the support of REI and Maricopa County Library District, prizes were awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in two categories: 3rd /4th grade and 5th/6th grade.

“This is an excellent program that teaches young students to be more environmentally conscious and responsible,” said Maricopa County Supervisors’ Chairman Andy Kunasek. “We are thrilled to see participation in our Stormwater Poster contest increase each year.”

3rd /4th Grade winners

1st Place: Yesenia Arellano, 4th Grade, Peoria Elementary, Ms. Bien
2nd Place: Emma Nasi, 4th Grade, New River Elementary, Mrs. Clover
3rd Place: Hannah DiFabio, 4th Grade, Calibre Academy, Ms. Sinclair

5th/6th Grade winners

1st Place: Jaimee Brown, 6th Grade, Rainbow Valley Elementary, Ms. Crause
2nd Place: Mia Barcello, 5th Grade, New River Elementary, Mrs. Davis
3rd Place: Jimena Martinez Medoza, 5th Grade, Palo Verde Elementary, Ms. Nelson

“Once again, this contest has been a good way to spread a very important message and it’s also fun for the kids,“ said John Kolman, director with Maricopa County Environmental Services Department. “We appreciate all the efforts by the students and their teachers in sharing their talents while learning about Stormwater pollution.” The winners will receive a certificate at a Maricopa County Board of Supervisors formal meeting presented by Chairman Andy Kunasek and the board members.

Winning posters will be used as part of the Stormwater Quality outreach efforts.
