Tucson man arrested in death of baby

On May 13, 2013 at 6:24 a.m., Tucson Police Department officers responded to a report of an unconscious and unresponsive 3-month old baby. The Tucson Fire Department responded and the 3-month old boy was immediately transported to a local area hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Hospital staff contacted Tucson Police shortly after the baby’s arrival and advised the injuries appeared to be non-accidental in nature.

Detectives determined that during the time of the incident, the baby was in the care of the adult daughter of the custodial guardians. The adult daughter had a live-in boyfriend, identified as 29-year old Genaro Urbina, in the home with her at the time of the incident. In the early morning hours of May 13th, the baby awoke crying and Urbina got up from bed to check on the baby. Detectives determined that during that time, the baby received injuries consistent with non-accidental trauma. Urbina put the baby back in his crib, and then returned to bed himself. The adult female awoke just after 6:00 a.m., located the baby unresponsive in his crib and immediately called 911.

On May 15th, detectives arrested Urbina. He was booked into the Pima County Jail for 1 count of Child Abuse. On May 16th, the baby succumbed to his injuries. He was identified as 3-month old Izayah Garcia. An additional charge of 2nd Degree Murder will be added to Urbina’s original charge of Child Abuse.
