PE should become core subject

The Institute of Medicine just released a new report that recommends schools make physical education a core subject, just like math and English, according to Will Humble, director of Arizona Department of Health Services.

According to the report, “44% of school administrators reported cutting significant time from PE classes in order to devote more time to reading and math over the last 10 years.”

“We know physical activity has health benefits for kids, and for all of us,” writes Humble. “We don’t often realize the academic benefits of physical activity. Studies show when students are physically active they have improved classroom behavior, improved attention span, and increased attendance at school.”
