Tucson Police officer fired for pulling gun on clerk

On July 16, 2013, the Pima County Sheriff’s Office advised the Tucson Police Department that they had a TPD Officer, 23-year old Kyle McCartin, in custody for a felony crime that had been committed earlier in the morning at the Giant Gas Station, located on Sunrise Drive near Kolb Road.

After an investigation by the Office of Internal Affairs and a review by the Chief of Police, McCartin was terminated from the Department.

McCartin was hired by the Tucson Police Department in September of 2012. He was on probationary status with the Department due to his tenure with the agency.

McCartin pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the clerk during a sales transaction, according to the Sheriff’s Department. A man with McCartin told him to put the gun away, but he pointed it at the clerk again.

The men were gone before deputies arrived. Deputies searched the area and both men were found a short time later at a nearby apartment complex.

McCartin never demanded anything from the clerk during the incident, but appeared to be under the influence of some intoxicant.
