7 year old Tucson pedestrian dies; father, sister ok

On September 29, 2013 at 6:32 p.m., officers from Operations Division Midtown responded to a report of a collision involving multiple pedestrians at the intersection of Speedway Boulevard and Alvernon Way. Upon arrival, officers located a father and two children who were involved in a collision with a vehicle. The 28-year-old father had minor injuries, and his 5-year-old daughter was not injured. The injuries to the 7-year-old son were serious and life threatening.

All three were transported to a local area hospital. The 31-year-old female driver of the vehicle involved was not injured.

Detectives from the Traffic Investigations Unit responded to continue the investigation. They determined that a 1994 BMW 4-door was traveling northbound on Alvernon Way and stopped in the right hand turn lane for a red light at Speedway Boulevard. The pedestrians were on the southeast corner of Speedway and Alvernon. When the light for north/southbound Alvernon turned green, the pedestrians started to cross Speedway northbound in the marked crosswalk and the BMW began making a right hand turn to go eastbound on Speedway. The BMW turned into the pedestrians, striking the father and the 7-year-old son. The driver of the BMW was cited for Causing Serious Injury or Death by a Moving Violation.
