National Latino AIDS Awareness dinner planned

The HIV epidemic continues to disproportionately affect the Latino community in Pima County. According to the Pima County Health Department, 1 out of 4 people living with HIV/AIDS in Pima County are Latino.

While Latinos represent approximately 16% of the U.S. population, they accounted for 20% of new HIV infections in 2009, the latest year for which data is available. The impact of HIV on Latino communities is directly related to health disparities and barriers faced such as poverty, migration, stigma, and acculturation.

In order to foster a community conversation about HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and education for Latinos, the Tucson National Latino AIDS Awareness Day Planning Committee is calling on Southern Arizona residents to join the cause and help break the stigma about this pressing health concern.
