Women injured by driver fleeing from Pima County deputy

pima-county-crashOn December 31, 2013, Pima County Sheriff’s Department deputies were trying to locate a pick-up truck that possibly had an intoxicated driver. At approximately 9:00 p.m., a deputy located and stopped the vehicle when it approached him head on in the same lane without lights at Speedway Boulevard and Painted Hills Road.

The deputy made contact with the driver identified as 34-year-old Alfonso Mateo Gutierrez. Shortly after the initial contact with the deputy, Gutierrez closed the door to his vehicle and sped away eastbound on Speedway Boulevard in the westbound lane. The deputy pursued Gutierrez due to his being a danger to the public.

After travelling in the opposite lane for approximately 1.5 miles, Gutierrez collided head on with a car in the 2000 block of West Speedway Boulevard. The vehicle was occupied by two females in their mid-twenties. The female passenger was transported to a local hospital with life threatening injuries.

The female driver and Gutierrez were also transported to a local hospital for treatment with non-life threatening injuries.

When Gutierrez is released from the hospital, he will be transported to the Pima County Adult Detention Center and booked on the following charges:

• Aggravated Driving Under the Influence
• Aggravated Assault, two counts
• Criminal Damage
• Fleeing From Law Enforcement
• Driving on a Suspended License
• And at least one outstanding warrant
