On January 25, 2014, at approximately 12:05 a.m., Pima County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to 7373 E. Valencia Road in reference to a traffic collision with an unresponsive driver. Upon arrival, deputies found 39-year-old Andrew Gaines deceased at the scene and a 61-year-old male in critical condition.
The Sheriff’s Department Traffic Unit responded and took over the investigation. Deputies learned that Mr. Gaines was traveling westbound on Valencia Road, and the 61-year-old victim was traveling eastbound when the two vehicles collided head-on. Both vehicles had severe damage.
A third vehicle collided with the rear of one of the vehicles after the initial impact. The 59-year-old female driver of the third vehicle was not injured. The 61-year-old male was airlifted to a local hospital for treatment and remains in critical condition. It is believed the drivers involved were wearing seat belts, and that speed may have been a factor.
At this time, it is unknown if alcohol was a factor; however, the investigation is ongoing
