Cochise County man dies in single car accident

On Tuesday afternoon the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office was advised of an accident at mile post 12 on Charleston Road.

A County Road employee was travelling on Charleston Road when he observed a section of wire fence down at mile post 12. The County worker advised that he stopped to check the fencing and observed a vehicle off the side of the road which appeared to have significant damage. The worker flagged down a Tombstone Marshal’s Deputy who checked the vehicle and discovered a man inside who was unresponsive.

Sheriff’s Deputies responded along with medical personnel from Health Care Innovations and discovered 53 year old Stanley Shuttleworth was inside of his 1986 Nissan truck and he was deceased.

The initial investigation indicates that Mr. Shuttleworth was westbound on Charleston Road when he approached a curve just before mile post 12. At that point, Mr. Shuttleworth continued straight, going off of the roadway, before the vehicle went through a barbed wire fence and rolled several times.

Mr. Shuttleworth was wearing a seatbelt which kept him inside of the vehicle which travelled over 1000 feet from the roadway. The condition of the body also indicated that the accident had occurred several hours before it was discovered.

Mr. Shuttleworths’ next of kin was notified of the accident and the body was transported to the Pima County Medical Examiners Office for the completion of an autopsy.

The investigation is being continued by the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office.
