On Friday April 11, 2014, at approximately 7:30 p.m., Tucson Police Department officers were preparing to serve a weapons related search warrant on an apartment in the 2600 block of North 14th Avenue. Before officers got to the door, Michael Castillo exited the residence.
Castillo, age 36, is believed to be involved in multiple incidents involving narcotics and weapons offenses. Officers attempted to make contact with Castillo, but he fled on foot into the complex. As officers pursued Castillo, a confrontation ensued and multiple gunshots were exchanged between the Castillo and officers. Castillo was struck several times and was transported to the hospital in stable condition. The officers were not injured during the incident.
As is standard practice in all officer involved shootings, the Homicide Unit will conduct a criminal investigation into the incident. Additionally, the Office of Internal Affairs will conduct a separate and parallel administrative investigation to examine the actions of department personnel in response to this incident.
