A new exhibit, Arizona Takes Shape, will open Saturday, April 26th at 10:00 am – 2:00 pm, at the Arizona Capitol Museum. The Arizona Territorial Brass will perform and The Rough Rider’s Historical Association will be in period uniforms.
Both groups are from Prescott and are making a rare appearance at the State Capitol. Celebrated author, historian, and Arizona Historical Society Central Division Director, Dr. John Langellier, will dedicate the Rough Rider Flag exhibit at Noon.
The exhibit explores how the Mexican American War and the Gadsden Purchase shaped the Civil War and the creation of Arizona:
• History at Your Fingertips, an interactive touch screen will allow users to get familiar with those who laid the groundwork for statehood by searching through thousands of digitized pages of historic Arizona newspapers on the Arizona Digital Newspaper Project.
• Rough Rider’s Flag. Carried by troops under the command of Theodore Roosevelt during the Spanish American War, this special artifact was the only national flag carried in the conflict. Now housed in new state-of-the-art display case making the flag available to view year round. The new exhibit will be dedicated at noon.
• Learn the Address: participate in this national social networking project to have Americans record themselves reciting the Gettysburg Address.
The Museum is open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Free parking for Museum guests in Wesley Bolin Plaza at 17th Avenue and Washington. For more information, go to: http://www.azlibrary.gov/museum/events.aspx or call 602.926.3620.
