Tucson Police are investigating a fatal vehicle collision involving an on-duty TPD officer and a bicyclist, 49-year old Francisco Galvez.
According to authorities, on November 1st, at about 10:15pm, Officer Alon Hackett was working a surveillance operation in the area of 1st Avenue and Navajo Road. He was driving a 2012 Nissan Pathfinder, which is an unmarked City of Tucson vehicle. Officer Hackett was traveling northbound on 1st Avenue in the curb lane. Mr. Galvez was riding eastbound across 1st Avenue in the area of Navajo Road. Mr. Galvez bicyclist rode in front of Officer Hackett and was struck with the right front corner of the vehicle. Mr. Galvez was transported to University Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries several hours after his arrival. Officer Hackett was not injured.
Detectives from the Traffic Unit and the Office of Internal Affairs responded to conduct an investigation into the collision, which is ongoing. As is standard in this type of incident, a Board of Inquiry was convened to review the circumstances.
According to the police, Mr. Galvez was not wearing a helmet. His bicycle was equipped with a front light which was still on after the collision. It also had a rear light.
