Sommerton collision on Avenue B fatal

On Thursday, November 20, 2014, at approximately 8:10 p.m., the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of Avenue B and County 18th Street in reference to a report of a two vehicle fatality collision.

The investigation at the scene revealed that a black 2003 Kia Spectra was travelling westbound on County 18th Street and failed to yield at the stop sign at the intersection of County 18th Street and Avenue B. When the Kia entered the intersection to make a left hand turn to travel southbound on Avenue B, it was struck by a silver 2006 Jeep Wrangler that was travelling northbound on Avenue B. The Wrangler struck the Kia on the driver side door.

The driver of the Jeep Wrangler was Mr. Marco Fuentes, 39, of San Luis, Arizona. Mr. Fuentes was transported to the Yuma Regional Medical Center by Somerton/Cocopah Fire Department for non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the Kia Spectra was Ms. Blanca Leyva Ramos, 19, of Somerton, Arizona. Ms. Leyva Ramos was pronounced deceased at the scene. Next of kin notification has been made.

The passenger in the Kia Spectra was identified as Ms. Maria Mirazo, of San Luis, Arizona. Ms. Mirazo was transported to the Yuma Regional Medical Center by Somerton/Cocopah Fire Department for non-life threatening injuries.

Alcohol does not appear to be a contributing factor.
