DPS investigates early morning fatal collision on I-19 near Sahuarita

On Sunday, January 11, 2015, officers from the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) investigated a single vehicle collision involving a fatality.

At about 2:50 a.m. a Toyota station wagon driven by Mario Granillo, 28, from Rio Rico, AZ, was traveling southbound on Interstate 19, at kilometer 77 (north of the Sahuarita Rd. exit). The station wagon entered into the emergency lane. Mario Granillo overcorrected his steering and lost control of the station wagon which crossed back across the southbound lanes of travel, rotating in a counterclockwise direction. The station wagon entered into the median area where it collided with a tree on the passenger side.

A passenger, Armando Granillo, 31 from Rio Rico, was ejected from the station wagon and expired at the scene from his injuries. Mario Granillo was transported to UAMC for treatment of his injuries.

The investigation is ongoing at this time and impairment is suspected.
