On Tuesday February 3, a husband and wife were both pronounced deceased in front of their home at 6812 E Chaparral Road. The couple has been identified as Sarah Drewer, victim and Douglas Drewer, suspect.
At approximately 8:20 a.m. a construction worker responded to the sound of a young child screaming for help. The worker made his way across the street where he observed a male and female struggling over a handgun inside the home. The worker intervened and wrestled the gun away from the subject. He then quickly escorted the female and child away from the home. Within seconds the male emerged from the house with another hand gun. He directed that the worker remove the child from the area. At the same time other workers attempted to move the child to safety.
Mr. Drewer then shot Mrs. Drewer several times killing her. He then killed himself. The young child was unharmed. The couple has a second child who was not present during the incident. Both are now with family members.
Scottsdale Police have had very little past experience with the couple. Officers responded to the home in December of 2013 reference a family disturbance. In that incident no criminal activity was discovered. Officers were at the home again on Friday January 30th. At that time officers served an Order of Protection to Mr. Drewer. He was removed from the home as required by the Order. Mr. Drewer also surrendered several firearms consisting of rifles and hand guns, which were impounded by officers. The surrender of these weapons was also a requirement of the order.
