The Arizona House Committee on Military Affairs and Public Safety will consider H.B. 2498 today Thursday, Feb. 12.
The bill would require the Arizona Department of Corrections to publicly report data about its use of solitary confinement.
The data would then be used to better inform policymakers as to the effectiveness of the state’s isolation practices.
According to the Arizona ACLU, solitary confinement – keeping a prisoner in a cell for 22 or more hours per day is costly, puts correctional officers at risk, and exacerbates prisoner misconduct and psychiatric dysfunction.
