TPD officer shoots, kill woman with knife

On Saturday, February 28, 2015, just before 9:00 p.m., Tucson Police Department officers responded to a business in the 1200 block of West St. Mary’s Road referencing a report of a suspicious adult female.  Upon arrival, an officer located the female and a confrontation ensued outside a nearby business.
The officer discharged his firearm and struck the female.  Several officers immediately rendered first aid to the female until the Tucson Fire Department arrived on scene.  The female was transported to a local area hospital with serious injury, but considered non-life-threatening injuries.  The officer was not injured during the incident.

The preliminary investigation of this incident has revealed that the female involved was armed with a knife. Witnesses on scene reported the female advanced towards the officer with the knife, in which the officer discharged his weapon.

The officer involved in the shooting is Ofc. Jaime Gutierrez, a 2-year veteran of the Tucson Police Department.  He is assigned to Operations Division Downtown.

Detectives from the Homicide Unit and the Office of Internal Affairs responded to continue the investigation.  As is standard practice in all officer involved shootings, the Homicide Unit will conduct a criminal investigation into the incident.  Additionally, the Office of Internal Affairs will conduct a separate and parallel administrative investigation to examine the actions of department personnel in response to this incident.

The local hospital where she was bring treated has reported that she succumbed to her injuries.  Next of kin have been notified and the female has been identified as 28-year-old Jessica Uribe.
