FaceBook post spurs Cochise County alert

Cochise County Sheriff’s Office works with Sierra Vista Police Department in Facebook threat arrest

On Sunday April 26, 2015 the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office and Sierra Vista Police Department were notified of an inappropriate Facebook post on a local page. The posting was anonymously submitted and indicated that there may be a shooting at the mall in Sierra Vista or at a school.

Sheriff’s dtectives worked closely with SVPD Detectives to identify the person responsible for the threatening post. With leads being developed and followed by detectives in each agency, as well as information from the public, an arrest of a 16 year old juvenile from Sierra Vista was made about an hour ago. The juvenile was brought to the Sierra Vista Police Department by his mother and after being interviewed he is being booked into the Cochise County Juvenile Detention Center on charges of Terrorism, Threatening and Disruption of an Educational Facility.

Extra patrols will remain in effect for Cochise County Schools tomorrow as planned for a precautionary measure that in no way indicates that additional threats have been received.

Sheriff Dannels said today, “It is unfortunate that people make these kinds of statements on a social media site with the sole purpose of inciting fear. The Sheriff’s Office will take extra precautions to help ensure the safety of our children and our schools.”
