Bureau Hiring For Goodyear Special Census

The city of Goodyear is seeking applicants to fill 200 part-time jobs for the U.S. Census Bureau as it conducts a Special Census to determine how much the city’s population has grown over the last five years.

Goodyear is among several Valley cities participating in a mid-decade Special Census that will begin with a knock on the door of residents’ homes in October. Prior to seeing census workers in your neighborhood requesting basic information, the candidates will have completed testing in August and training in September. The city began accepting applications for the census enumerators and crew leader jobs last week.

“We want to make sure we have enough people to conduct the survey in an accurate and timely manner so there are no delays,” said Goodyear Long Range Planner Joe Schmitz, who is helping to oversee the Special Census. “We encourage eligible residents to apply because we would like to hire people to survey the neighborhood where they live.  When this process begins, we would hope that residents will cooperate so we get a full and complete count.”

Schmitz said the city receives money from state-shared revenue which is divided amongst all cities according to their population. This allocation currently is based on population figures from the 2010 census at which time Goodyear had 65,275 residents. Based on the number of new dwelling units constructed since 2010, the city now estimates the population to be closer to 77,000. As a result of this increase, the city could see its annual revenue increase by as much as $1.5 million. Goodyear currently receives slightly more than $16 million in state-shared revenue annually. The money goes into the general fund to provide services such as police, fire and recreation.

Residents interested in working for the Census Bureau must be U.S. citizens, at least 18 years old, have a valid driver’s license, a car available to drive, and able to work during the day, evening and on weekends. The hourly pay is $16.25 an hour for enumerators, and $17.75 an hour for crew leaders. To apply, visit  www.goodyearaz.gov/jobs and click on the Census Worker link.
