Superintendent of Public Instruction Diane Douglas said that she is elated by Attorney General Mark Brnovich’s opinion on the application of Small School Weight (SSW) to Arizona charter schools.
The opinion, released today by the Attorney General, clarifies language in legislation that was passed earlier this year. Had SB 1476 been applied by the Department of Education as written, several small charter schools would have seen significant impacts to their funding.
“I am thrilled that we will be able to fund these small charter schools at a higher rate than initially estimated,” Superintendent Douglas said. “We truly appreciate Attorney General Brnovich’s timely response to our request for an opinion and will work to provide updated guidance to affected schools as soon as possible.”
The Superintendent, who said she is opposed to SB 1476’s cuts to charter schools, also stated that the Department is calculating revised fiscal impact estimates that take into account the opinion’s conclusions.
