The preliminary investigation into the Tucson Police Department officer involved shooting has revealed that the male suspect was armed with two large knives. Witnesses on scene reported the male advanced towards the officers with the knives and it was at that time the officers discharged their weapons.
The suspect was transported to a local area hospital where he remains in stable but serious condition.
The officers involved in the shooting are Officer Sean Callaway and Officer Zachary Barghout. Both Officers are 2-year veterans of the Tucson Police Department. They are assigned to Operations Division Midtown.
On Monday at approximately 6:45 a.m., officers were dispatched to an apartment complex to check the welfare of the man. Upon arrival, officers made contact with the man at his apartment.
The officers were not injured during the incident. Detectives from the Homicide Unit and the Office of Internal Affairs responded to continue the investigation. As is standard practice in all officer involved shootings, the Homicide Unit will conduct a criminal investigation into the incident. Additionally, the Office of Internal Affairs will conduct a separate and parallel administrative investigation to examine the actions of department personnel in response to this incident.
