Friday was officially the last day of “work” for Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik. For years, Dupnik ran his office to serve himself and cronies with little regard for the residents who elected him and the deputies who served under him.
The era of corruption did not end on Friday, but Dupnik’s charade did, and for that we are grateful. We are grateful for the fact that he will no longer play the residents of Pima County as fools.
His hand-picked replacement, Chris Nanos, has big clown shoes to fill. According to those who know him, Nanos will do nothing to change the good-ol-boy-double-dipping-top-heavy management of the Department. As a result, deputies will live with barely livable wages while management hides out in remote cubbies sprinkled across the Sheriff’s domain.
Under Nanos the clan of five will continue to act like dictators: hiring friends, employing questionable hiring processes with preselected outcomes that everyone knew about ahead of time, special favors for relatives in business, and over-paid civilian managers.
If Nanos has less contempt for the residents – it will be an improvement and every bit helps. Sadly, the residents of Pima County have become accustomed to so little for so long, that they will be grateful that Nanos isn’t beating the hell out of them while stealing their money.
