On Wednesday, August 5th, the SunTran management company Professional Transit Management (PTM)/TransDev, and Teamsters Local 104 failed to come to an agreement for a new contract for SunTran workers.
The city council requested that Tucson Department of Transportation staff and PTM/Transdev devote immediate time and attention to resolving the Sun Tran strike.
“It is clear that the 22 assaults on drivers over the last 13 month period, including one driver being stabbed, is a major concern” said Council Member Paul Cunningham. “We need to make sure employee health and safety is a priority, along with fair compensation.”
Labor rules that govern negotiations require that the Mayor & Council cannot insert itself into the labor negotiation process.
Labor negotiations with the Teamsters are the responsibility of PTM/TransDev by virtue of the City’s contract with PTM/TransDev. This structure is necessary in order to preserve the City’s ability to receive federal funding for transit, while also preserving the Teamasters’ collective bargaining rights.
