Northwest Fire Wins PETA Compassionate Fire Department Award

A Compassionate Fire Department Award, courtesy of PETA, is on its way to the Northwest Fire District after firefighters rescued a dog from a burning mobile home on W. El Caminito Place last Thursday morning. In just 30 minutes, firefighters controlled the flames and made sure that the dog, who was the only member of the family in the home at the time, made it to safety.

The dog is reportedly in good health, with no lasting damage from the fire.

“Thanks to these determined firefighters, this dog was spared a painful, terrifying death,” says PETA Senior Director Colleen O’Brien. “PETA hopes their kindness and bravery will inspire others to come to the aid of animals in need.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—encourages all animal guardians to put a sign on doors or windows to alert rescue workers to the presence of dogs, cats, and other animal companions.

The Northwest Fire District will receive a framed certificate, a box of delicious vegan cookies, and a copy of The Engine 2 Diet—a Texas firefighter’s 28-day plan for staying in prime firefighting shape by eating a plant-based diet.
