State Rep. Andrew Sherwood has been best known for his patronizing demeanor and his biting tongue, but now he is known as senator after he was appointed to the state Senate to fill the vacancy of Sen. Ed Ableser, who resigned his seat and moved to Nevada.
Sherwood, like Ableser a Tempe Democrat, was named in a unanimous 5-0 vote by the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, who chose among three names submitted by Legislative District 26 Democrats. The other nominees were State Rep. Juan Mendez and LD 26 Party Chairwoman Samantha Pstross, a professor at DeVry University.
Sherwood, a dog trainer, was first elected to the House in 2012.
The appointment of Sherwood creates a vacancy in the state House of Representatives and the nominating process that begins with LD 26 Democrats will be repeated. Supervisor Steve Gallardo, the only Democrat on the board, praised Sherwood as a lawmaker “willing to sit down and talk” with other lawmakers, Republican and Democrat. “He’ll be a great advocate,” Gallardo said.
