Thanks to the snow on Mt. Lemmon, a few animals at Reid Park Zoo enjoyed chilly treats Wednesday afternoon. A volunteer delivered a truck load of snow for distribution at approximately 1:30 p.m. Zoo Keepers try to arrange for the special treat when snow is available.
It had not yet been determined which animals will have the pleasure of romping in the snow. Visitors will be directed when they arrive at the front gate of the Zoo. Staff will be on hand to answer questions and direct guests to habitats where animals are exploring the snow.
Keepers regularly introduce a variety of foods, changes in physical environment, smells, and even sounds as enrichment. Anything can be considered enrichment that is not part of an animal’s daily routine. It can improve an animal’s well-being by increasing exercise, satisfying behavioral needs, or providing species appropriate stimulation. Creating a varying environment for Zoo residents is an important aspect of whole-life animal care.
