The American Red Cross, in conjunction with the Sierra Vista Police Department and Cochise County Office of Emergency Services, is seeking volunteers to help in the event of disasters in Cochise County and Southern Arizona. When a disaster strikes, the Red Cross provides food, clothing, and shelter, as well as health and mental health services. It depends on volunteers to help get this done.
Prospective volunteers are requested to attend the Red Cross Psychological First Aid class at the Sierra Vista Police Department, located at 911 N. Coronado Drive in Sierra Vista, on Friday, March 4, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. There is no cost for the class and people can attend as individuals or in groups. The class is capped at 30 participants. This is the first step in becoming a Red Cross volunteer.
Additional training requirements include completing some basic online classes and attending an eight-hour training session that includes a mock setup of a Red Cross shelter. All in-person training will take place in Sierra Vista.
To register for the class, contact SVPD Commander Daryl Copp at (520) 452-7500 or Daryl.Copp@sierravistaaz.gov or Cyndi Carina, with Cochise County Emergency Services, at CCarina@cochise.az.gov or (520) 432-9220.
