
Today at approximately 12:30 p.m., Pima County deputies responded to the intersection of La Canada Drive and Hardy Road for a traffic accident involving bicyclists. Deputies learned that a group of about ten bicyclists were southbound on La Canada Drive stopped for the red light at Hardy Road, in the designated bike lane.
A pick-up truck, driven by 28-year-old Brian Lynch, was also southbound and struck five of the bicyclists. Those five bicyclists sustained injuries. 72-year old Clare Rhodes succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead on scene. The other injured cyclists were transported to Banner University Medical Center.
Kenneth Vieira, age 68, later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital. One cyclist remains in critical condition and the two others have been released with minor injuries.
Brian Lynch was arrested on scene for driving under the influence, two counts of manslaughter, two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, one count of aggravated assault with serious injury and criminal damage.
