At their regular meeting on March 9, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors made formal their support of Recreational Equipment Inc. (REI) moving into Free Trade Zone (FTZ) No. 277 in Goodyear.

An FTZ is an area that is considered to be in international commerce for U.S. Customs purposes. Any foreign or domestic material can be moved into a FTZ without being subject to U.S. Customs duties. An FTZ is operated as a public venture sponsored by a municipality and Zone Grantee.

REI is currently under construction at the PV303 Industrial Park at the SW Corner of the Loop 303 and Camelback Road. The facility will be a new build of more than 439,000 square feet and is expected to create between 125 – 150 jobs.

“We’re glad to support REI in their bid to be part of the Free Trade Zone,” said Chairman Clint Hickman, District 4. “This project brings new construction and new jobs to the West Valley and, with it, new tax revenue.”

“REI has done a lot for our Parks Department and trails,” said Supervisor Andy Kunasek, District 3. “They’ve been a great community asset to those outdoor activities that we hope people will take advantage of more often.”
