The Cochise County Sheriff’s Office has been advised of a telephone scam that has been circulating in our area for the past several weeks. This time, the potential victim received a phone call on his cell phone from a male subject with a Hispanic accent. The caller told the man that he wanted his bank account information or his daughter (and he used her name) would be killed.
The caller advised that man that he had thirty minutes to comply or else. The potential victim advised that the number was from “out of country”.
The potential victim then called the school to verify that his child was there and school officials confirmed her attendance and checked on every student to ensure that their daily roster was correct.
Although the Sheriff’s Office and other public safety agencies have advertised this information, they have also asked that schools disseminate this information to the parents of their student body to alleviate some of their fears as they anticipate that the schools may see an increase in parents calling in for attendance confirmation.
